Why Health Check-In Starts With 'How Do I Feel?'

2025-07-29·philosophygetting-started

Most health apps want you to log meals, count steps, or track sleep hours. They start with numbers.

Health Check-In starts differently: "How do I feel right now?"

The feeling comes first

Before you can find patterns in your health, you need a baseline. Not a baseline of steps walked or hours slept — a baseline of how you actually feel.

That simple question — answered on a slider from 0 to 100 — becomes the anchor point for everything else. Every supplement you try, every habit you adjust, every experiment you run gets measured against that one question.

Why a percentage?

We chose a percentage instead of a 1-5 scale or emoji because:

  • It's granular enough to detect subtle shifts. The difference between 55% and 70% is meaningful over time.
  • It's intuitive. You don't need to learn what each number means — 80% feels good, 40% doesn't.
  • It works with math. Averages, trends, and comparisons become possible.

What happens after you check in

Once you've answered how you feel, you can optionally add:

  • Reasons — quick tags like "slept well," "headache," "stressed," or "energetic"
  • A note — free-text context about your day
  • Weather data — automatically captured so you can correlate later
  • Experiment links — connect this check-in to something you're testing

Over days and weeks, these check-ins paint a picture that's impossible to see in the moment.

The power of consistency

You don't need to check in five times a day. Even once daily — ideally at a consistent time — is enough to start seeing patterns within a few weeks.

The app will remind you if you'd like, and checking in takes about 10 seconds. That low friction is deliberate. The easier it is to log how you feel, the more likely you are to keep doing it.

Start simple

If you're new to Health Check-In, just answer the question. Don't worry about experiments, routines, or AI analysis yet. Just check in daily for a week and see what the data tells you.

Everything else builds on that foundation.
